Between January and April 2025, the Heart of a Giant Foundation (HGF) conducted over two dozen community-based blood pressure screening and health education events across 7 Greater Boston-area neighborhoods and online: Mattapan, Dorchester, Roxbury, Jamaica Plain, East Boston, Brockton, and Bridgewater.
Key Highlights

- Over 160 participants (47%) had elevated blood pressure readings—many unaware of their hypertensive status.
- On-the-spot education and lifestyle counseling were provided, along with referrals for follow-up care.
- Neighborhood Reach:
- Roxbury and Dorchester led in attendance, with 100 and 85 participants, respectively.
- Roxbury (55%) and Dorchester (49%) had the highest rates of elevated BP readings.
- BP Averages Across Neighborhoods:
- Systolic: 130–145 mmHg
- Diastolic: 80–89 mmHg
- Pulse rates indicated potential stress or undiagnosed cardiovascular risks, with averages ranging from 7 to 78 bpm.
Participants expressed deep appreciation for the culturally responsive approach, the accessibility of services, and the personal attention received, especially seniors and those managing chronic health concerns without regular care.
Conclusion
This quarter’s data illustrates an urgent and ongoing need for accessible hypertension education, preventative screenings, and culturally tailored outreach. HGF continues to serve as a trusted, community-embedded health partner.
Together, we are building healthier futures—one screening, one story, one step at a time.
