Merci Papa – 2018 Father’s Day

My first son is about to turn four. So, as I reflect on living with my illness and my journey as a father, one phrase often comes to my mind – ‘Merci Papa’, meaning ‘Thank you Father’ in French. My dad worked to instill in me values and qualities that are invaluable tools for living with my illness.

Plus, a son never forgets (#ASNF). I observe everything he does, why, how, what… I study every detail and often I mimic him, setting goals and pursuing them relentlessly. There’s more but words aren’t enough to explain this – A dad is just special.

I’ve seen him happy and I have seen him sad, often hiding through a tough barrier that only my mum or my sisters can unlock. He’d weather storms with calm and bravery and celebrate victories with an unequal humility and modesty.

He has taught me a lot and I am forever grateful to him. More importantly, he’s made me tough enough to never give up, focused enough to not worry about the inconsequential and brave enough to face the unknown ahead.
My dad is my hero. Often misunderstood, sometimes challenged, but always appreciated. He’s done his job well – Prepare me for life.

I am always thankful, and I hope I would be worthy of their time, especially as a dad to my son(s) and an uncle to my favourite nephews and nieces.

Perhaps, he was being charming or were it out of excitement. But then again I am a positive man by nature and that’s the part I focus on :).
